Oh thats a great way to phrase it! I will definitely add that to the holidays list/contract!

And thank you all for your replies, is true that it does not sound right to call it a "holiday".

      Lazy "Care givers"

While you all are talking about closing on the 3rd, parents are still working on the 3rd, and while you're in bed on the 4rd, parents are trying to find care for their kids.
You're just a bunch of lazy people trying to suck every penny out of parents while feeding your lazy attitudes. As if your entitled to an extra days holiday. Unbelievable.

It's a lot but I do require families to have a back up so, they all have other options.
But no, I don't think it's too much. I suspect many people will be doing the same. I'd call it a personal day too though.
Waw, you are probably the biggest loser in this forum for even typing this nonsense.

Why should workers from big companies get paid time off and not child care providers? Do you want them to have burnout or to offer subpar care for your children because of one day? I take 12 paid holidays a year plus 7 sick / personal days and I'm very professional about it and my parents figure it out. People need time off to recoup and rejuvenate and it actually helps people work better and stay dedicated for longer periods of time than people that work themselves to the bone. And besides all of this information is listed in my hand book and my Tour Packet Folder so if people don't like that I take paid holidays or sick/personal days, they don't have to enroll with my program.

Always unregistered...And when, exactly, is the 4rd?

I suspect you've never worked as a child care provider.

While I do plan to be open on the 3rd, several dc parents will have the day off and they will bring their kids to me to watch that day anyway. For the record, I have no problem with that. That's what they pay me for and if I had wanted to take the day off, I could have made that choice. l doubt, however, if any of my dc parents would have begrudged me the down time because they know how hard I work for their kids on a daily basis.

On the 4th, when most of my families will be vacationing, enjoying a day at the beach, barbecues, parades, etc... I will actually be getting up early to be in my backyard, spreading mulch in the day care play area to prevent the kids from getting seriously hurt, helping my husband replace the fence that keeps the dc kids safe and scrubbing down toys that have become dirty from the use they get every day. As that's happening outside, I will have a load or two of laundry (nap time bedding, bibs, burp cloths, blankets) running inside. During my unpaid vacation the following week, I will finish what I couldn't get done on the 4th. I will also be taking a CPR/First Aid class, combing through my paperwork in order to prepare for the re-licensing visit I have coming up, taking on-line courses to meet professional development requirements, catching up on tax paperwork, preparing curriculum plans for the next month, etc. I'm sure I'm not the only child care provider who uses time off to catch up on things we didn't have time to do during our normal work weeks.

Please don't assume child care providers are lazy just because they need an extra day off or two in order to prevent burnout. As a group, we work very hard for the comparatively low income we earn.

I am closed June 29-July 5.....with pay.....and NO, I don't feel guilty.....I actually am thankful for the mentors I have had through the years that taught me to value myself and my family while providing QUALITY care for families in my care. There is a balance, but, after many years of not doing so, I have found balance for MYSELF/FAMILY as well! I value all holidays, personal days, vacations days, professional days, etc....and take so according to MY FAMILY and our needs. That does not make me a terrible person, it makes me a person who is successful and passionate about my child care program and my family with a balance for both.

                      THIS!
You have to take care of yourself too, otherwise you will definitely experience burn-out! This is a high burn-out profession and I'm sure most(maybe not the trolls who only want cheap 24/7 care for their kids they had but don't want to be with) parents would want quality rested providers in their child's lives.
Gotta love the hateful trolls, always entertaining and gutless.

Unregistered, you're right....we should never be allowed a day off, ever. 🙄

If parents are scrambling to find care while we are "in bed", they dropped the ball by not arranging back up care with the ample notice we give them for our vacation days.

I'm taking the 3rd, 4th, and 5th. After returning from a pretty short maternity leave earlier this year I'm ready for a break. I'm learning that it is way easier for families to get coverage during the summer, and most kiddos would have been out anyway.
