Ugh, I hate smoking and have ahuge issue with it and people smoking anywhere near my home. This is what I have in my handbook:
    Smoking
The daycare home has always been a non-smoking environment and so smoking is prohibited inside the home at all times. Smoking is not allowed anywhere on the property during the hours of operation or when children are present. Please be courteous to myself and to the children and not smoke near any entrances or windows so that smoke does not come into the home.
I've never had the problem of anyone ever leaving cigarette butts anywhere on my property but I think if it ever did happen I would pick them up, put them in a baggy and then talk to them in person about it.

I would be ticked. I'd hand the baggy to them and say something like "I have noticed that for some time someone has been leaving cigarette butts on my driveway and porch. These are just some of them that I have picked up over the last [period of time]. There were more but I didn't keep them because I was hoping it was just a fluke. This is trash and since you are the only smoking family that I have I have to assume that these are yours. Please don't leave them anywhere on my property anymore. Keep your butts in your car and throw them away anywhere but on my property."

I would tell them that your lic inspector, food lady or a mentor came in today and commented on it,.. I would address it to everyone as a whole by placing a note on the door, PLEASE KEEP YOUR SMOKING MATERIALS AND GARBAGE IN YOUR POSESSION AND REFRAIN FROM LITERING OUR PLAY SPACE. I WAS CITED FOR HAVING SMOKING MATERIALS IN OUR PLAYSPACE TODAY AND I AM A NON SMOKER. THANK YOU.

I have a dcm who smokes, I have seen her drive up my street and throw her cigarette out her car window before pulling in to my driveway. Lately I have found cigarette butts in my driveway. I have just picked them up and have not said anything. Today, my husband comes home for lunch and finds a cigarette butt on my FRONT PORCH!!!!!!! She was the first to arrive this morning, so that means that all my other dc parents saw this when dropping off their children! How rude and disgusting! What if one of the other kids picked it up or touched it? She obviously knows that children come to my home, how could she do this? I have to say something to her, but how do I word it? I am soooo mad right now that I think I would be really rude. Any suggestions?? I never signed up for teaching grown adults manners--

I agree, I fully respect your right to smoke, Im not going to even go into the health aspects,.., Im sure everyone sles does. But how do you smoke through the day? here no smoking on dc property during dc hours.... licensing reg. do you have a helper come so you can leave and smoke? I have to be within direct site of the kids, no stepping out on the porch for a minute like my neighbor does for smokers in IN ... and LORD help my own mother if she had to go all day, . how do you handle it? (strictly information wanted, not trying to attack anyone. Im generally curious.)

Not sure about every other state, but here in MI, a law was passed saying no one could smoke within x amount of feet of the entry to any business. Then, about 6 months ago, another law was passed saying that there was no smoking in any public property (including bars and restaurants and such), but then the first law was revoked, as anyone can smoke just outside entries to public places, just not in them. So, would that change the laws for dc also?
You are going to die! The only thing written in my state's licensing about smoking is: The provider may not smoke while preparing food or feeding infants. Isn't that crazy???? Apparently you can smoke in the playroom and it would not be a violation!

She did not pick up her daughter last night or drop off today, so I did not get to talk to her. I do not want to discuss it with her husband, I think I need to address her directly. I probably will not see her until Monday, which is good, because I will hopefully not be so angry about it by then. That way I can address the problem calmly.
