I just want to chime in and say that this is worth doing something about. Third hand smoke really is "that harmful". I quit smoking when I found out I was pregnant. My husband always smoked outside, never around our son. We never really factored in third hand smoke but always thought, hey, he's not breathing it in, we're doing ok. Eventually, the third hand smoke exposure due to my husband, and later myself starting smoking again, (then quitting), and a house we moved into for a short period of time that had been smoked in, my son contracted bronchitis a couple times, eventually pneumonia, and the last time, had a lung fill up with mucus and almost couldn't breathe. It was terrifying and after doing every test under the sun over and over and over, specialists finally combed over his medical history to see what caused it. It was scary, oh so scary, and I will never touch another cigarette again. Aside from still feeling like a failure more than 1 year after the last time he got sick, I keep that memory to remind me that the cigarette is not worth it. Neither is going to our in-laws house
