  • Dad Just Stands There

Ok. I have a dad that will just stand here for about 30 min. He doesn't come in and sit down, he stands in my door way. Here the back story. He gets off at 2 and doesn't pick up until 5. Ok no big deal, I get paid no matter what. So at 4:30 I get DCG ready for pick up. All except for her coat and in her car seat. When I see him pull up, he watches me put her coat on, and put her in her car seat. I hand the car seat to him, and he will eaither sit her on the floor, or hold it. Then he will stand there and every 5 min or so he will say something and its really nothing that has anything to do with her or anything I need to know. Yesterday he was talking about how he can never get anything done since he has the two (yes I said 2) kids at home by his self since the wife works at til 7. Its almost like he wants me to feel sorry for him but since I have at least 4 kids all the time and still manage to keep my house spotless due to daycare I don't. How do I get him to pick up and LEAVE. Im sorry but this family is very strange and I don't want to stand here and talk to him. Its getting to the point that I can't even start anything until after her leaves, and so now my family is getting a late dinner and homework done. Even when I don't start convo with him he still just stands there. And this is the last pick up of the day so its just me and him and the kids.

"It was nice talking to you! I will see you tomorrow. Have a wonderful evening. " and open the front door.

When I have a DCP that can't seem to take the hint to get in and get out, I incorporate a new storybook time at their usual arrival/departure times. It is then quite obvious they are interrupting, and it is impossible to have a conversation when reading to children.

I would hand baby over and let dad get her ready to go home. Then, when he's got baby ready, I would just glance at him, make eye contact, smile, and give a small wave...all while reading to my captivated audience.

After a week or two, a new habit is established for DCD, and the reading at that time can cease. If he has a relapse, like one poster says on here, rinse and repeat!

I've done both of these suggestions. Both were very effective.

I am sure Nan will chime in, but the poor man is lonely and seriously doesn't want to go home with those babies alone for 2 hours. He's said as much. So, you are now providing childcare for them and adult care for him.

Either do as suggested above, or put him to work while he's standing there. Litereally..."hey, as long as you're just standing there, would you mind grabbing the vacuum? It's always so hectic here at the end of the day!"

Since it is the last pick up of the day, just tell him nicely.

"Dad you are the last to pick up and it is now time for me to start my family's dinner and help my children with their homework. See you tomorrow! (and hold the door open with a big smile).

This is the last pick up of the day. Just tell him- bye, have a good night, time to get started on dinner/homework and open the door with a big smile. Just be direct! If you do as PP said about putting him to work (which is funny) he would probably be thrilled! He's not going to be home with the kids alone-you will still be watching the kids, you are still late with dinner and homework. No way would I do this-we don't linger here! Especially at the end of the day
