  • Do You Allow Cloth Diapers?

A DCB here uses them on occasion and he leaked/peed through 3x yesterday. I let parents know and they said that they leak sometimes and that his pants were soaked from nap. I change kids here every 2-3 hours unless they poop so I'm not sure what else I can do?

DCM said that she withholds fluids at home. But I'm not going to do that here. DCB went through 3 sorts yesterday.

    Help!

I allow cds. But I also tell parents that if they are leaking that they will need to use disposables here.

    It's a sanitary issue. And it's gross.

I also require disposables for nap times.

I would tell mom that she needs to figure out a solution to the leaking issue and until she does, that you will require disposables. And that any further leaking issues will require a permanent return to disposables.

The cds probably need to be stripped and or have more absorbency added. No reason for them to be leaking regularly.

      Properly working ones shouldn't leak.

      They are also our future.

We do not allow them at the center where I work. Simply because the parents do not properly wash/strip/whatever they need. We have allowed 2 families to use them, and both have made the room and child stink. My boss said no more after the second family. People at if they are treated properly that doesn't happen, but we cannot make the parents do what need to be done, so policy change to no cloth.

They shouldn't "leak sometimes" unless they aren't being cleaned correctly.

I also think cloth diapers need changing a bit more often than those in disposables so every 2-3 hours might be too long in between changes. Especially if the child is really young still.

As for allowing cloth diapers, I support and encourage cloth diapering. I give a discount if parents use cloth.

I have a rule though that if a child leaks or has "issues" with cloth, that the parent leave a supply of disposable here for me to use when necessary.

Like toilet training, if the cloth diapers have more than so many leaking incidents in a set amount of time, I ask the parent to reassess their cleaning methods before sending the child in cloth again.

I have never had a parent request to use them but I would allow it...but they would have to work properly. That would be non-negotiable.

I don't allow them. I really do respect the motives of people who support them but they are not for me. I have cared for children who were cloth diapered when I worked in centers and that was enough for me. We did diapers every two hours (or more) but they still leaked all the time. They stink. The diaper bags are wet/damp and smell bad. Some of the parents used a diaper service and some washed themselves, and they all used different styles but I didn't have one experience with cloth that felt sanitary to me. One of the babies got ringworm in his diaper area. I just don't want that (poopy wet dog) smell in my home...sorry

No need to be sorry! That is one of the HUGE positives in doing this work. We are the boss and get to set our own policies! Don't ever apologize for doing what is right for YOU!

I've used different kinds of cloth diapers on all 6 of my own children, 2 grandchildren, and several dck. ITA that they shouldn't leak but will need to be changed more often than disposables.

What kind is she using? She may need to add absorbency, or "strip" them, or the outer/cover could be the problem, or they might not fit correctly.

Cloth diapers get old and can have problems that are not fixed by a proper wash routine/stripping/etc.

IF the elastics are worn/stretched -- diapers will leak, the only way to fix is to replace the elastics (sew in new ones or pay a seamstress to do this for you)

IF the PUL (waterproof layer) is cracking -- diapers WILL leak and need to be completely replaced

IF there is not enough absorbancy -- diapers need to be changed more often or extra layers of cotton added, or diapers will leak.

My daycare worked with me, I had some older diapers that were starting to have problems. I had them write down on my child's report which diaper leaked, I'd go home and test it/find the problem and either replace or fix before sending it again.

There is no reason not to use cloth at naps.

I'd require the problem to be fixed if they were constantly leaking or put on some of those Gerber plastic pants over the diaper and you won't have such an issue. I've done it before for my super soaker cloth diaper kids so they could handle 1.5 hours between changes.

My own children get cloth diapered as well. Never had leaking issues with my own. My 3.5yo was cloth diapered until 2.5 (even overnight) and she's a super soaker.
