  • Venting...Parents Refusing To Potty Train

Have 3 year old kids that are not potty trained. Two families are not even considering potty training! The kids know when they are wet, when they poop and can verbalize this. However it is like the parents want their kids to be "babies" forever? It is a challenge as they get older the poops get bigger and diapers only are made so big!

It just doesn't make any sense to me why parents wouldn't want to try? Are they going to start when they are 4 or 5 years old?? seems ridiculous to me to wait that long!

I have a 1 year old that is potty trained and a 2 year old that is potty trained and the three oldest are still wearing diapers!

I have suggested to parents weekly
"So any potty training this weekend?"
"when do you think you will be ready to potty train?"

The KIDS are ready! It is the parents that are in denial...
    Suggestions?

I refuse to do all the potty training work for them while they will just pop a diaper back on them when they take them home.

I don't even discuss potty training. That's on the parents.

Age shouldn't even be mentioned when discuss potty training though as every kid is different so a 3 yr old ready to train is no different than a 2 yr old ready to train...other than the actual age #, it's about developmental skills and yes, parents usually do what's easiest...diapers are easiest.

I only care for kids until they enter Kindy...if they want to leave them in diapers until then, that's on the parent not me.

So much less stress this way.

My written policy is that the parents do potty training.
I also do not take kids over 3 who are not potty trained. I know some providers offer a discount for kids who are potty trained (and they have to actually be trained, not just the parents word for it...)

Buuuut, I have potty trained kids here who were ready but parents seemed clueless. But this is at my discretion and I only do it if it works for me.

          This is me as well.
I don't push it at all.
It's a parental responsibility, not mine.

The only part I really speak up about, is if the parents push it before the kids are ready. Then, I hand out my potty training policy and go from there.

I used to stress about it, but not anymore. I have 2 boys whose parents didn't put any effort into potty training. The boys were ready, but the parents weren't.

They were early 4 when they finally trained...

I didn't potty train my own until after 3. I waited until HE was ready. There really was no training. Straight to underwear and not one accident ever. That's the way I like it.

I chose not to push him for several reasons. First, there is medical evidence that children benefit from uninhibited elimination until around age 3-it helps their bladders develop. Early training is linked to hardened bladder walls (meaning bedwetting-a hardened bladder is unable to hold a normal amount of urine). Second, I can't see a reason to push a child to potty train and then ending up with stressed and unhappy child and parent. I introduced the potty at around 14 months. We let him use it whenever he chose, and encouraged it, but we never bullied him into it or bribed him. I encourage my families to do the same with their kids.

It really doesn't bother me whether a kid is potty trained or not.

Oh the potty training thing. I feel ya. I have 2 boys, they're about a week apart in age. They turn 3 in a couple of months and both are amazing smart and totally could potty train if they wanted. Mom talked to me about her 1 son and we worked on it a couple of months ago. Meaning, I put him on the toilet like one an hour and he went nearly every time. He never told me he had to go, so after a couple months of that and him going from wearing pullups and then back to diapers, I thought hmmm, I think he's not doing this at home. He's here 50 hours a week, so I thought that it was 100% just me that he was beiing put on the toilet by. So I checked with mom and it was well, sometimes he'll go on the toilet, so I backed off. Quite honestly I feel it has to be a 2 way street. We can't do here, what you don't do at home. It is gross though I won't lie when he poos because he's a larger boy and it's kinda adult like. yuck . The other mom I talked to her about it back when I started with this one and she flat out laughed and said, Oh I'm not ready for him to not be my baby. Ok whatever. I get paid the same. So, I'm not doing either at this point. I refuse to do all of it with a parent not doing any.

I will say I don't know how it is possible even though I hear stories about 1 yr olds being potty trained. I don't know how their little bladders could even have that control.

I've always taken on the responsibility of potty training, and it is a burden. I agree with the others that it's the parents responsibility, but to be honest, it mostly inconveniences me because I am the one dealing with the poop all day. The parents usually get one wet diaper at night and one in the am, and I am stuck with all the BM's.
I recently trained 4 in my class (I'm back at a center). All four were ready, but parents were waiting for...me to do it I guess? Fortunately, I am moving out of the young class soon, so this all should be a distant memory ::
I don't understand it either. If the child is ready, why wait?!

I made a cut off age for when I was uncomfortable changing a diaper. This past year I had a 4.5-year-old boy, the size of a 6yo boy, who was untrained. I was terribly uncomfortable so I implemented a potty training policy at that point that they must be trained by 4.5.

Perhaps you can do that so you know that the child will be potty trained by a certain age? I know a lot of children who aren't potty trained at 3. Seems to be 3.5-3.75. I haven't had any untrained 4yo's besides the one from last year, though, and I have exclusively preschool age children here.

Once they're over 4, I have them change themselves. It really helps them realize that THEY have control over their bodily functions, I think. They don't like doing it, and I tell them that it is THEIR choice whether to do it. If they don't want to, they are more than welcome to use my potty. They all do.
