I'm getting ready to start the interview process again. It's been over 2 years since I had to do this, and I'm a little rusty. I have an amazing batch of families that has been with me from the start. I am really not looking forward to this whole replacing a baby process. I do not have to replace him immediately, I have the luxury of being able to wait until I find a family that I think will be a great fit. I fully expect to interview people that I choose not to offer a position to. When they see that my ad is still up, they will know that I didn't accept another family, I just did not accept theirs. I know the standard "I don't think you are the right fit for my program", but what do I say when they ask what exactly it is that I don't think will fit?

I've never actually done this before.... but think I am going to need to after some interviews this weekend.
I will be using email (how we have been communicating to set up the interview). I plan on telling them that while it was lovely to meet them, I will not be offering the space to them at this time as I don't think it will be a good fit. That is it. I do not plan on offering a reason as to the why.
I am hesitating on whether I should do that now or wait until I hear from them (if they are interested).

"There are many specifics that go into choosing the correct fit for my little child care group. While it's important to me to find the family who is the right fit, this does not imply anything that you are doing wrong, or anything else that is personal. I do appreciate your interest in my child care and wish you the best in your search."

I say "I'm holding the spot until the family leave, their last date hasn't been finalized due to their circumstances" when I don't want that family. If they see the ad being reposted (nertz to mertz) and if they say something I say "I don't keep a waiting list (which is true), the date of the opening was changed and I wasn't sure you were still interested". Most families get the hint. I've never had any family harass me about it.
