  • Naptime--Early Riser

I have a 4 yo who has FINALLY started letting me know that he wakes up early from nap. I've suspected it for awhile, but he never has let on. well, now he finally started getting himself up about fifteen minutes early...now it's drifted to thirty.

Would it be unreasonable of me to ask him, if he wakes up early, to please stay on his cot and look at books until nap is officially done? They nap in a dark room with not much in it, but I'd be will to put a small basket of books in there.

Or should I just suck it up and admit that the face of naptime is changing in my daycare?

(disclaimer: I'm not a daycare that insists all kids nap, i will not term a child who is no longer napping, I'm JUST asking if it's all right to have him look at books quietly for 30 minutes or so)
Hee hee! Look, I have a signature!

I think it's fine. I have one that wakes early and I just give him some books-usually a look a find-that's his fav as he would do them for hours.

We look at books for 15-30 minutes before naptime while everyone is finishing up eating lunch, going potty, putting on pull-ups/new diapers, etc. So, no. I don't think reading for 15-30 minutes is too much to ask but since he is a 4-year-old boy he may end up rousing the others.

I've got one also who wakes much earlier than the others...and I've also got a 3 you who takes much longer to fall asleep, so between the two of them, one is awake at all times. On a good day I will have maybe 15-30 minutes of down time.

            That is fortunate!
I was just picturing what the 4-year-old boys in my care would do if they were left to "read books quietly" in a dark room where others were sleeping for 30 minutes. ::

I hope all of the kinks get worked out and naptime can be relaxing for all!

I have 2 three year olds and they stay on their cot untill he lights are on if they wake up before nap is over. Yes I say give him some books to look at but he should stay on his cot if that's what you prefer.

I have cloth bags for my nappers that wake early. They have books and foam puzzles in them (They sell the puzzles at $store and walmart). I've also included a few foam block sets and/or 5-6 flash cards in the bags as well.

My kids also have to stay on their mats. We nap in the same room as our playroom.
