  • 3 yr old Telling Me he "Doesn't Want to Listen"

I have a soon to be 3 yr old that is on time out a lot. This morning, within the first 15 minutes, I told him 3 times to not run in the house. He is now sitting out again. He sits there and whines (he is my king of whining), and I told him you have got to start listening to me. He looks at me and says "I don't want to listen to you". Hmm, that is pretty apparant, and I wonder, just how many times outs in a day does it take to get it thru your little head.

Do you have hardwood floors? Pledge on hardwood floors works wonders for children that don't like to use their "walking feet" inside.
Not really, but don't you wish?
We were told to put obstacles in their way to remove the urge to run, make sure there are no "runways" (like airplanes take off from).
I guess for the not listening thing a simple "too bad, my house, my toys, my rules. You either follow my rules or you don't get to do any of the good stuff, you just sit and watch your friends play".
Of course with 3 year olds, hardly anything is very simple.

I have a just turned 3 year old dcb and just recently when I tell him not to do something he yells at me, "I'm going to throw you in the garbage" or he'll say "my dad said I can do that and to throw you in the garbage". Hopefully it's just a stage. I like the polish on the hardwood floors , I know can't do it.

mac,... Have you been peeking in my playroom? ,.. Little R turned 3 in feb. he is,... well. The poor kid is so cute with his defiance,.. he says,.. I dont want to listen to you,.. I dont want to play with my friends, I dont want to go home.... I just tell him,.. well,.. thats ok,.. you can not want to in a little while, but first lets,.... then I add whatever I want,.He thinks about it and decides that he has a choice, just not right now,.. so he goes along with my wishes. then when he is playing nicely,.. I ask him to come to me and say,.. R,.. if you dont want to play with your friends you can go sit on the red carpet and feel better,.. by that time he changes his mind and is having fun....

I have a 4 yr. old girl, that is coming as a fillin, Mom starting to go back to work- Mom said she will definately have a problem, during naptime, because she hasn't taken a nap since she has been 18 months old????? I told her that everyone has to have quiet time here, they don't have to sleep, but just rest. SO yesterday was fine, until about 1/2 hr. into nap, then started screaming Mommy and crying hysterically, woke up the 2 babies/toddlers, plus the other little boy I have. UGHHH!!! SO she comes again today, and the am was awful- kept crying and crying, finally had to place her in time out, and it worked for a while. We kept trying to find her things to do. UGHH!!! How draining and a 4 yr. old!!! She has never been away from Mom, except this yr. she started preschool. WOW!!! I bet quiet time will not go good today either!!!
Her Mom did ask if she could play her leapster during naptime. I said no, because it is totally not fair to the other older children here that must take naps!! I hope today goes better!!!

OMG my 3yo dcb is told constantly not to run in the house. He likes to run around the futon I have dividing the room, the space between that and the shelf is there only for me to get through if I have to ... Well today he was tearing around it, yet again, tripped, fell face first and smashed his head into the shelf. While giving him cuddles I asked him, "Are you going to run anymore?" "No" he answered. He hasn't, but we'll see what happens after nap time.

In all my years of dc, I have never had a child tell me "I don't want to". I bet he has said it to me at least 5 times today........GRR. I know who is the boss at his house........accounts for his behavior too.

You are lucky that you dont hear from your daycare kids to say those words. A few kids had tell me "I hate you, I don't like you, I don't want to listen you, I don't want to clean up, and some foul words (can you image they were only 2 or 3 years old)."

When I grew up, we would of gotten soap in the mouth, and if we would of said it to another adult, it would of been soap and a spanking......unforfunately today, many adults think this behavior is "ok" and doesn't warrant any punishment or consequence, then these little things keep getting bigger and bigger. Honestly, our world is a little sad in that adults have done away with the responsibility of producing respectful children. Time outs, redirection, I just have to laugh.

That is Hilarious! I have hardwood floors and have fallen on my butt more than once from pledge getting on the floor after dusting. I have a hard headed kid too. NOTHING gets through to him. It is frustrating.

You need to pay more attention to ur love ones and play with him more. and maybe he will listen to you.

                        Yikes!

To the poster who advised that maybe if the child was getting more attention, I just have to ask, are you a daycare provider? Do you know how hard it is to split your attention in so many directions? Until you firmy understand what it's like, then keep your unhelpful comments to yourself.

Kids are great with the "I don't want to" comments. I just let them know that I understand that maybe they don't want to do whatever it is that I've asked them to do, but sometimes we don't get choices. For instance, naptime is non-negotiable. No use in arguing about it with me, I won't budge. As far as the running in the house goes, I have he same rule too because I have really slippery laminate. If a child runs all the time in the house, then it's a time-out if they won't listen. I explain why I don't want them to run and once they slip and fall for the first time and they realize that it hurts, then they usually stop. I have no "indoor runners" anymore.
